Bed bugs and luggage: checks during a hotel stay
To reduce the chance of carrying bed bugs in luggage, keep bags closed and off the bed, use a luggage rack or shelf away from the bed when available, and inspect the bag seams and clothing after a stay. The US EPA recommends using a rack instead of the bed or floor when packing or unpacking; the CDC notes that bed bugs can hide in seams and folds of luggage, bags, and clothing.
Before and during a hotel stay
- Check the rack first. If the room has a luggage rack, look it over before placing a bag on it. Use a shelf or another hard surface away from the bed if the rack is unavailable.
- Keep bags zipped when not in use. Keep clothing and other belongings inside your luggage rather than spreading them on the bed or floor.
- Pack and unpack away from the bed. The EPA recommends using luggage racks during packing or unpacking and trying to keep luggage away from the bed.
- If you see a possible sign, pause. Keep the bag closed, contact the accommodation, and ask how they want you to handle belongings before moving them to another room.
A simple travel routine
- Inspect the room before unpacking.
- Keep luggage zipped and away from the bed.
- Ask accommodation staff before relocating belongings after a concern.
- Look along bag seams, pockets, and corners for possible signs.
Start with the hotel-room checklist before you unpack. If you find suspected signs, read what to do next.
